WHITE
AS MARBLE
Marble’s
quarrying is one of the most ancient trades. Romans climbed the
mountains to quarry marble’s blocks to build villas, gardens and
fountains.
And
from then on, the job of those who work in the quarries is one the
hardest trade, notwithstanding the tools, the techniques and means
of transports used nowadays.
Fantiscritti’s
quarries, above Carrara, are the most fascinating in all Tuscany.
Visiting the Franca Giorni’s school and the museum we find a
visual proof of the workers’ life, of the marble’s quarrying and
making.
Every
corner hides something: an old pulley, a steel rusty construction,
the roads across which the marble blocks were transported. Reaching
the school, then, we meet Franca, who will be ready to explain us
the techniques for marble’s making, strating from quarrying up to
the creation of a work of art.
